What happens when your child turns 26? They are officially off their parents’ insurance plan. At least on health insurance. They may still be on auto or whatever. How do you prepare your child for when that happens? How do you prepare them for their first credit card or their first bank account that has nothing to do with you? The Dads discuss the time when the parents have gone as far as they can.

Beer Dad Jon’s “day job” took him to Denver and it just so happened that one-way tickets were more feasible in this situation for him and his Pilot. So, they decided to take an adventure, driving from the Mile High City back to WSNC via the nation’s “heartland.” In this episode, Dad Jon tells of their trip, their stops, food, fun, frolic and more.

As we all get older, our bodies start to change what it will tolerate and what it will or won’t allow you to do. Some of it is your fault, some of it is nature and some of it is unexplained. Dad Paul was just told that he has to give up caffeine. That’s going to be a chore for him because he’s always said he’d give up beer before he’d give up coffee. Turns out he wasn’t given that choice. It may be temporary or it may be permanent, but that’s what he’ll have to figure out as he goes on. Dad Tim had to cut sodium when he had his surgery. He had to cut a lot of things after that; things he loves. Dad Jon had to give up running as his knees and hips couldn’t handle it. Getting “old” sucks but it’s always better than the alternative, right? What have you had to give up that you absolutely didn’t want to?

The Beer of the week is Lieutenant Dank by Wicked Weed.

Carolina Cobras QB Robert McCullum  ©CarCobras

Dad Tim works as the PA Announcer for the Carolina Cobras, the Greensboro-based arena league football team. A few weeks back, Dads Jon and Paul, along with their pilots attended one of the Cobras’ games. The Cobras lost that game (pretty badly, actually) but, the Dads talk about the thrill and advantages that local sports have over their bigger league counterparts. To hear the smack talk between the players, the coaches yelling instructions, the hits, the crack of the bat, and so on. It’s all much cooler when you are in on the action.

Mostly a Pissed-Off Paul episode, but all the Dads had a fun time bad-mouthing those who give a business their number to be able to do business and when the company calls, the customer’s (or potential customer’s) voicemail box is completely full. This is especially annoying when the outgoing message plays and then tells you the box is full. The Dads discuss this scenario as well as other inconsiderate ways to annoy a person, whether it’s business or whatever. What bugs you the most about inconsiderate folks?

The Former Business 40

The closure of Business 40 in Winston-Salem has had a direct effect on businesses in the downtown area. What other towns could have a major road, that basically bifurcates the entire town, shut down and that town act like nothing happened? None that we know of. The closure is of a scope the state of North Carolina has never seen. But, we have to start blaming something else for the struggle it creates for the businesses within our fair city. Could it be an oversaturation of the same kinds of places? A workforce that is underqualified to handle the demand? There could be a hundred reasons but the bottom line is our businesses, and to an extent, our whole city, is struggling and suffering. The Dads talk about what’s going on and possible reasons why.

Remember there is no The Beer Dads Podcast today. We would like to take a moment to remember those who have ultimately lost to the benefit of the freedoms we enjoy in this country. Happy Memorial Day!

Student loans. I know we are all groaning right now. The dreaded student loan. Bane of recent college grads (or dropouts) and even long-

lived adults. When the Dads went to college, mostly tuition was affordable and many times loans weren’t necessary, or there were other ways they got their tuition paid. Dad Tim is different, he went back to school later and racked up some serious student loans that are around 2/3 of his mortgage. With all three Dads either having kids in college or approaching that age, what does the future look like for these young people’s lives? Tuition and boarding rules and rates are so high now that many people have so much student loan debt that it either comes close or exceeds the value of the holder’s mortgage on his home. That’s why many people call student loans their “other mortgage.” Do you have student debt? Do your kids? What can be done about it? How do you prepare your kids for it? Let us know.

You know you can’t please everyone, right? Sometimes, though, it seems you can’t please anyone. Whether or not you’re trying to please everyone or not, there will always be people complaining, especially online. It’s one thing to give your opinion, but your opinion gets lost when you just start whining and complaining about stuff that is irrelevant. Let’s call it what it is… bitching. Be constructive, not destructive. You can voice dissatisfaction but you don’t have to bitch and moan. Truthfully, it’s only your opinion anyway and when your opinion becomes a crusade to convince others of your contemptuous and many times erroneous opinions, people start to shut it out or follow you into the idiotic abyss. Keyboard warriors most likely wouldn’t say half of the things they say online to someone face to face. Maybe that’s a good thing, probably it’s a bad thing. The Dads talk about this, possibly bitching themselves.
